Why Am I Suddenly Getting Pelvic Pain?

Pelvic pain in women can be a symptom of many underlying conditions – some that require urgent medical attention. If you experience sudden or intense pelvic pain, you can find the help you need at The Guirguis Obstetrics & Gynecology Group.

Our team of board-certified OB/GYNs use the latest technologies to accurately diagnose the root cause of pelvic pain. They provide personalized treatment plans to address reproductive health issues that contribute to pain and may cause other complications.

Common causes of pelvic pain in women

Pelvic pain can be a side effect of your monthly menstrual cycle. While it’s common to have some discomfort from menstrual cramps during your period, it’s important to seek a proper diagnosis with our team if you experience changes in your pain levels or an intense pain that doesn’t go away after your period ends.

Other causes of pelvic pain in women that require medical attention include:

Pelvic pain can also be a warning sign of reproductive cancers affecting your uterus, cervix, or ovaries.

Additionally, women and men may be prone to sudden pelvic pain due to conditions like appendicitis, urinary tract infections (UTIs), or kidney infections.

What to expect during your diagnostic evaluation for pelvic pain

Our OB/GYNs work with you to uncover the root cause of your pain, so we can treat it right away. When you start treatment early, you can significantly lower your risk for additional health complications.

During your evaluation, our team completes a physical exam and may also perform a pelvic exam to check for cysts and other abnormal growths. They can request blood work to screen for an infection or confirm a pregnancy.

If these tests don’t provide enough information about your condition, you may need an ultrasound or a minimally invasive laparoscopy procedure that allows our physicians to view your pelvic organs up close.

After identifying the cause of pain, our team discusses your options for treatment. We focus on the least invasive therapies to relieve your discomfort and improve your overall health.

Exploring treatments for pelvic pain

Treatments depend on what’s causing your pelvic pain and the severity of your symptoms.

Our physicians may prescribe pain relievers to minimize pain from menstrual cramps or antibiotics to clear a kidney infection or a bacterial STD like gonorrhea or syphilis. Our team can also provide resources to help prevent additional infections.

If you have chronic pain from endometriosis, cancer, large fibroids, or cysts, we can determine if you’re a candidate for surgery. Our providers have extensive training in da Vinci® robotic surgery, so they can remove excess endometrial tissue or abnormal growths through very small incisions.

In some cases, we can refer you to a physical therapist who teaches you exercises to strengthen your pelvic floor. You may also benefit from mindfulness activities like meditation to relieve stress and tension that makes chronic pelvic pain worse.
