Our practice is comprised of physicians, nurse practitioners, and certified nurse midwives, all working together to benefit patients in both wellness and illness.
Dr. Guirguis started this practice in Park Slope Brooklyn in 1987. Dr. Guirguis graduated from Cairo medical school and went on to specialize in general surgery as well as extensive training in plastic and cosmetic surgery. He then found his passion in women’s health care and went on to complete his residency in OBGYN at Brooklyn Hospital.
Dr. Swenson is a board certified OB GYN. Originally from Brooklyn NY, Dr. Swenson graduated magna Cum Laude from Siena College and received her medical degree from SUNY- Upstate Medical University in Syracuse where she was elected to AOA Honor Society. She completed her residency training at NY Methodist Hospital where she was awarded multiple teaching award from her peers.
Dr. Swenson joined the practice in July 2010. Her areas of interest include Adolescent Gynecology, Management of Abnormal Pap Smears/Colposcopy, and Minimally Invasive Surgery.
Dr. Guirguis is a board certified OB GYN. He grew up in Brooklyn before heading to Boston where he received his undergraduate education at Tufts University. Dr. Pete then earned his medical degree from SUNY- Upstate Medical University in Syracuse and completed his Ob/Gyn residency at the University of Connecticut in affiliation with Hartford hospital.
He joined the practice in July 2011 and became a certified robotic surgeon shortly thereafter. He looks forward to providing comprehensive Obstetrical and Gynecologic care for all patients with special interests in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery.
Dr. Jill Skoczylas is a board eligible OB/Gyn. She is originally from Southern California. Dr. Skoczylas graduated with Honors from UCLA and subsequently managed a research lab in the Department of Pediatrics and Infectious Disease in which she was published for her research on Coxsackie Virus. She received her Medical Degree from St. George’s University where she was on the Dean’s List and served on the Student Government. She completed her residency training at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital where she was Administrative Chief and was in charge of the education schedule for the residents. Dr. Skozylas is very excited to join the practice this year. Her areas of interest include Menstrual Cycle Abnormalities, Menopause and Minimally Invasive Surgery including Robotic Surgery.
Katherine received her midwifery degree, with honors, from Columbia University in 2012. She is especially interested in breastfeeding, natural birth, and family planning.
Gillian has been working in women’s health in Brooklyn since 2001. She worked as a midwife in private practice in East Flatbush for 7 years before joining Dr. Guirguis practice in 2009 as a nurse practitioner. She grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended Macalester College followed by a master in Midwifery from Columbia University. She taught fourth grade in Baltimore city and worked in sales before becoming a midwife.
Shawna King, CM., is one of our certified midwives. Shawna’s journey to midwifery began while volunteering in a small village in Zimbabwe Africa. She graduated in 2002 with her Masters of Science in Midwifery from the State University of New York. Before joining the Guirguis Group in October 2015, she worked for eight years at Mount Sinai Hospital providing full scope midwifery care to the women of East Harlem. She continues to be dedicated to her volunteer work globally. She has spent the last five years volunteering with Saving Mothers in their Guatemala Project. Shawna is passionate about providing high quality and personalized care to women and their families.
Jillian Barovick is a certified nurse midwife who joined the Guirguis Group in November 2017. After graduating from Rutgers University in 2004, Jillian worked at several non-profit, social justice agencies in NYC before deciding to go back to school to become a nurse midwife. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from Drexel University in 2011 and worked for over 4 years as a labor and delivery nurse within the Mount Sinai Hospital system. In 2017, she completed her Master of Science in Nurse Midwifery at Frontier Nursing University. As part of the Guirguis Group, she looks forward to providing patient-centered care for women and their families.
